Basel Fasnacht — Culture, Identity & Civic Expression

I have to admit… I was a little too lazy to wake up at 4AM to see the very beginning. 🙈But so many people weren’t. At that hour, the entire city center fills with people who come to witness the start. What truly surprised me was the scale and the format of it all. The idea itself is comedic, ironic, deeply satirical — and somehow inspiring. Especially when, in my mind, Swiss people are usually restrained. And then suddenly — they reveal themselves as so artistic, so bold, so playful.People prepare for months for this event. Months! The level of dedication is impressive and says so much about their seriousness — which, in a way, is also such a Swiss trait. This mix of discipline and humor is fascinating.Every country has something that defines its cultural rhythm. In America, maybe it’s jazz. Or rap. Somewhere else it’s rock. And here, I feel like Fasnacht is something uniquely Swiss — almost like a national sport in its own ironic, theatrical way.And honestly? It made me see Switzerland differently. -Dash
